PhysicsUndergraduate and postgraduate degrees in Physics are offered in a variety of subject areas.
Members participate in an active and internationally recognised research program in Physics. Research areas include high energy astrophysics, atmospheric physics, high performance computing, geophysics, mathematical physics, medical physics, optics and photonics, particle and nuclear theory, and physical archaeometry. The School hosts the Special Research Centre for the Sub-Atomic Structure of Matter and the National Institute for Theoretical Physics, and has strong links with the South Australian Partnership for Advanced Computing. Physics occupies the Physics and Oliphant Buildings on the western side of the North Terrace Campus (see map).
Opening of the new Centre of Expertise in PhotonicsWednesday 31 May 2006 marked the official launch of the Centre of Expertise in Photonics with over 100 invited guests attending a special function in the School of Chemistry & Physics Seminar room in the Physics Building. Founded in early 2005, the Centre of Expertise in Photonics is a world leading research centre focused on the design, fabrication, development and application of soft glass microstructured optical fibres. Please follow the link to find out more about the opening of the Centre. http://www.chemphys.adelaide.edu.au/recent/Photonics%20Opening.html Can You Believe It?Follow this link to the popular Advertiser newspaper Can You Believe It articles that were written by our very own Associate Professor Derek Leinweber! Learn why cricket balls swing, what the new design of the World Cup soccer balls allow, how to turn lead into gold and many other intersting articles. http://www.physics.adelaide.edu.au/theory/staff/leinweber/Advertiser/index.html
