The School of Chemistry & Physics

The School of Chemistry and Physics at The University of Adelaide brings together and consolidates the University's broad-ranging and cutting-edge research in the fundamental disciplines of Chemistry and Physics. The School is located on the North Terrace campus in a group of buildings in close proximity to each other. The School has over 200 staff, postgraduate and honours students.

The School offers an exiting range of teaching programs which are at the forefront of developments in Chemistry & Physics. In addition to the BSc program, there is a suite of recently introduced specialist degrees in Molecular & Drug Design, Ecochemistry, Nanoscience & Materials, Optics & Photonics, Space Science & Astrophysics and High Performance Computational Physics.

Research within the School receives extensive external funding and involves major collaborations with researchers nationally and internationally. The research interests in Chemistry within the School are grouped into the following themes: biological chemistry, chemical synthesis and laser and ion chemistry. Physics research encompasses high energy astrophysics, atmospheric physics, high performance computing, geophysics, mathematical physics, medical physics, optics and photonics, particle and nuclear theory, and physical archaeometry. To conduct its research, the School has a wide range of state-of-the-art equipment, IT and infrastructure supported by technical and workshop staff.

Within the School (located in the Physics building) is the ARC Special Research Centre for the Sub-Atomic Structure of Matter, the National Institute for Theoretical Physics and the Centre of Expertise in Photonics. The School has strong links with the South Australian Partnership for Advanced Computing which is also located within the Physics building.

The Head of the School is Professor Derek Leinweber.

The Discipline Heads are Professor Mark Buntine (Chemistry) and Professor Bob Vincent (Physics).
